Purpose-Built Subsea Technology: How obs Engineered a First-of-Its-Kind Offshore Plug Valve
When one of the world's largest energy service operators couldn't get the support they needed from traditional OEM channels, they came to obs with a challenge: design a purpose-built Offshore Well Intervention Plug Valve that simply didn't exist yet. We answered.
The Challenge
The operator required a highly specific valve capable of performing in demanding offshore conditions, H₂S service, 10,000 PSI working pressure, and compatibility with ROV-operated robotic intervention systems. No off-the-shelf solution existed. Traditional OEM channels couldn't deliver. obs was called in to solve it.
The Solution
Working exclusively with our client in Australia and our manufacturing partner in Korea, obs led the entire development journey from concept through to deployment. The result is a 2" Fig 1502 Offshore Well Intervention Plug Valve, engineered to exacting specifications:
- H₂S Service rated
- 10,000 PSI working pressure
- 2" Fig 1502 configuration
- ROV-operated handle manufactured to API 17H standards
The ROV-operated handle enables precise subsea actuation and full compatibility with robotic intervention systems in demanding offshore environments, a critical requirement for the client's operations.
This is Not Iterative Engineering
This valve is not an adaptation of existing hardware. It is new plug valve technology, created from the ground up to solve a real operational gap. The development process required hands-on engineering, precision manufacturing, and close collaboration between our team, the client, and our Korean manufacturing partner, all coordinated and delivered by obs.
What This Demonstrates
obs has always been more than a distributor of catalogue equipment. This project is a demonstration of what we are capable of when clients come to us with problems that the market hasn't solved:
- End-to-end project management from concept to deployment
- Access to precision manufacturing partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region
- Engineering capability that meets international API standards
- The ability to deliver bespoke solutions on time, in demanding environments
obs continues to push beyond catalogue equipment and into custom offshore engineering solutions. When global operators need solutions, not excuses, they call us.
